Unique: Your Source of Purpose

Have you ever wondered about your purpose?

Have you ever asked yourself: "Why am I here?"

Many people search their entire lives trying to discover their purpose. Others just wander through life day after day hoping that it will all end well.

But that doesn't have to be you. Finding your purpose is HARD work. But it is well worth the effort to discover how to flow in the joy of what you were designed to be. There is nothing like it.

I call it FREEDOM.

1. the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

But how do you get there? I propose that you start with defining what makes you Unique.

There is NO ONE else like you on the planet. This is true even on a physical level. Your DNA is unique to you and only you.

Add to this the fact that no one else on the planet has your exact same experience. Where you grew up, the people who raised you, the things that you like, the things that you don't like, your personality, your cultural exposure...all of these go into making you UNIQUELY YOU.

So how do we jump from Unique to Purpose. Let me share with you some ways that the above can reveal your true purpose (what you were meant to do on this planet):

Have you ever disagreed with someone over a situation that you both saw through a different perspective? I think that we all have been there. There are so many things that influence the way that we process our experiences and make judgments. Your environment has taught you many things as the years have ticked on. Those lessons are tucked away in your brain as guideposts to get you through this thing that we call LIFE.

Most people don't think about what they are thinking. They just think and act. The next time that you disagree with someone (or something that you read or hear), ask yourself "Why do I disagree with that?" "Why does that makes me angry or sad or emotional?" "Why is that important to me?" Keep asking "Why..." until you understand what is actually driving you to think the way that you do. Those drivers are a clue to the problem that you have come to solve in this world. They make you UNIQUELY YOU.

Some people love being in the presence of others (read "life of the party"). Some people are more reserved and prefer to be alone (read "Lone Ranger"). Some people love conversation. Some people love quiet presence. Some people think of others first. Some people think "How does this impact me?" before thinking of others. Some people love hugs. Some prefer a firm handshake. Some people love gazing into the eyes of others. Some people prefer to look at their shoes! LOL

I could go on and on about the differences in how we choose to interact with those around us. But you get my point. We all handle people interactions differently. I am of the opinion that, other than violent behavior, there is no "right" or "wrong" way to interact. Case in point is one of my favorite movies: Rain Man. If you haven't seen it yet, put it on your list for this weekend!

How we choose to interact with people is also influenced by the things that were were taught and the things that we learned. It can also be a reflection of some genetic coding that wires us differently from everyone else. Whatever the source of this difference, it helps us to determine our UNIQUE. I absolutely love the more recent discussions on things like "emotional intelligence" and "introverts living in an extroverted world." They underscore our quest to reconcile how we differently we interact with one another.

I want you to know that however you are RIGHT NOW is good enough! Stop trying to FIX yourself and embrace your own difference. Educate people on your difference. Don't let them shame you into giving up your UNIQUE.

The last category I want to cover is how you "show up" in the world. This includes your personality, preferences, and presentation. Your personality and preferences typically influence how you choose to PRESENT yourself to the world. So, if you are a rebel that does not really care what people think, you likely reflect this in the radically different way you choose to present yourself (hair, clothes, jewelry, etc.). Or maybe you are someone who prefers to follow trends and fit the current groove of the day. Either way that you flow, it is UNIQUE to you. No one PRESENTS in this world exactly the way that you do.

All of the above things go into defining you and through understanding it better, you can decide how to use your UNIQUE to make a difference in this world. I call that PURPOSE.

I want to tell you more about how UNIQUE is related to PURPOSE, so look for future posts that tie in with what is here.

I would love to hear what you think. What have I missed? What have you struggled with? How did you get through?

Talk to me...
