A Letter to the Younger Generation

Dear daughters and sons,

I wish someone had told me. I wish that I had known. I wasted so much time living in the zone of unsure.

I knew that I wanted to make something of myself. My mother and father had instilled in me the hope of possibility.

They said "You are smart. You can do it." I didn't understand the value of those statements back then. They gave me something that many don't have: hope. Hope for a better tomorrow.

I have had my share of bad situations. Wrong decisions. Dysfunctional relationships. Confusion about life.

But in the midst of it all, I declared "I shall..." "I will..." "I can..."

There is nothing more powerful that determination and perseverance.

So many times I was told "You are crazy. You can't do that. You are strange."

I kept going despite it all. There is a lesson there. Follow your heart. Listen to the whispers that tell you which way to go. The voice of the crowd (that is society) is loud.

When I look over my life, I realize something. The times that I followed my heart; that is the deep inner peace within me, I made good decisions. The times that I followed the voice of others, I ended up in a place I did not like.

Sons and daughters, I want to tell you to follow the whisper inside of your soul. Don't let small-minded people keep you from living the big dreams that you see in your mind.

Do you know about the Hero's Journey? You should read about it. We are all on a journey. Life is not about what you do. Life is about who you are and what happens as a result of who you are.

Who are you when you look in the mirror? Who is staring back at you? Do you know that person?

If you don't, I want to invite you to start your soul-searching journey today. The greatest peace that I found was by connected to God, higher than myself, who showed me who I am within.

Life is more than things. It is more than money. It is more than anything you can possess. These THINGS can evoke certain feelings. But they do not define who you are. Who you are is much greater.

When you learn to value your own life, you will value the life of others. And when you learn to value life by the things that are intangible, you will transcend the belief that what you own is a reflection of who you are.

In fact, what you choose not to possess is a reflection of your spirit.

I have only one question for you: what do you choose?
