How to Set Supportive Goals for Your BHAG (Not So Attainable Goal)
In my last post, I talked about setting BHAGs - Big Hairy Audacious Goals. I also call this a "not so attainable goal."
The problem with setting attainable goals is that they are boring. They don't excite us. They don't challenge us. And when we can't get excited about our goal we are more likely to procrastinate and quit. Who wants to achieve something that won't make a big difference to their life?
But when you dream big and set that BHAG, you will likely be overwhelmed. After all, this goal is not easy. This is where a supportive goal comes in.
Supportive goals are those attainable goals that build into your BHAG. They take your BHAG and break it into bite-sized chunks that you can complete.
Let's take an example of landing your DREAM job or business. This is not your next job or your side hustle, but the job or business that would excite you. Define it. How much money are you making? What are you doing? What would your perfect day look like? Imagine your future. Write this down in as much detail as you can. This is your BHAG.
Now, let's review what you said and see what steps you need to take to get to your BHAG.
What skills are you missing? What classes or training do you need to get those skills? Who do you know that can help you get started? Is there a professional group or organization that you can tap into for more information? How much money will you need to invest to get started? Begin writing down the answers to these questions.
As you begin writing, more questions will develop. Write these questions down! At the end of this process, you will have a good list of the things you need to do to get from where you are now to your BHAG.
Now, review your answers to the above questions. What one to three actions can you take NOW to move towards your goal?
For example, you might need basic information on how to start a small business. This can be one goal.
You may need $500 to start your business. This can be another goal.
You may need to find a professional organization in your industry to join (or a Facebook group). This can be another goal - find a professional organization to connect with.
Now you have a BHAG - Start my DREAM business (described in great detail).
And three supportive goals:
Get basic information on starting a small business.
Save $500 to start my business.
Join a professional organization or Facebook related to my business.
These are your supportive goals. And they are very attainable.
Now that you have a BHAG with a vision and some goals, you need to set your intention and solidify your motivation. Next up, I will explain how a vision board can help you with this. Then we will look at how to break those supportive goals down to specific actions you can take and how to make those actions SMART so you can get traction and focus.
