The Hero's Journey

“Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.” ― William Jennings Bryan

In my last post, I continued my discussion "Who is Your Master?" and challenged you to "Decide for Yourself."

It all sounds so easy. Just decide for yourself and you will be free.

de·cide

/dəˈsīd/

verb

come to a resolution in the mind as a result of consideration.

But deciding requires you to consider. And considering requires you to think and explore.

I also made reference to the "Hero's Journey," a concept that Joseph Campbell help us understand. He called it "the monomyth." And its narrative is visible in many popular movies of our time including The Matrix, Star Wars, the Hobbit, the Wizard of Oz, and the Lion King (you will never look at these movies the same once you discover the "Hero's Journey").

It starts when an unassuming and seemingly "normal" person is pulled out of their comfort zone and called to an adventure.

The hero is called to complete a seemingly impossible task. And he or she is given a choice. They have to DECIDE.

If they accept the call, they are taken on a journey into the unknown. They are aided along the way by people and supernatural forces.

They enter a battle in which their will, determination, and integrity is tested. If they succeed, they are rewarded and journey home. But they are never the same. They are braver. Wiser. Stronger.

The hero has found something more than their original world could offer. And they are richer spiritually, morally, and emotionally. And they make the world a BETTER place.

This is the hero's journey.

When we awaken to the struggle of our existence, we are faced with a decision.

We can decide to stay inside our comfort zones and normal existence.

Or we can take a bold step in the direction of our conviction. And head out for an adventure.

Adventures are NEVER nice, neat, and tidy. They are messy and full of unknown territory. They take us into scary and dangerous places.

How do you break free from the masters controlling you?

  1. Get outside of your comfort zone.

  2. Head out for an adventure.

  3. Dare to achieve the impossible.

  4. Face your demons.

  5. And struggle with yourself to achieve something BIGGER than yourself.

Henry David Thoreau said,

There is greatness in you. And the pathway to your greatness begins with a journey to discover your Unique value.

Nothing in your life will change until you DECIDE.

You can be a hero. You can make the world a BETTER place. And it starts with a decision...

P.S. Heroes also are aided along their journey. I can be your help on this adventure. Email me to find out how I can help you - info@theartofubyrebecca.com
