One Thing That Won't Make You Happy
Everyone is in pursuit of happiness.
the state of being happy.
We pursue so many things trying to create this state of joy, peace, and fulfillment.
In my journey, I have discovered that there is ONE thing that will NEVER make me happy.
And that ONE thing is this: Getting what I think I want.
Money, sex, "good times," titles, power, popularity, and status are all very cheap substitutes for true happiness.
What we don't understand is that happiness is NOT something that you can possess. It is something that you BECOME. It is a state of being that is independent of your possessions or status in society.
Take a look around. People who have "everything" use drugs, commit suicide, experience depression, and have failed relationships. These people have all of those things that we spend our days and nights pursuing.
And NONE of it provides happiness.
I was once addicted to chasing and possessing happiness. Then I noticed a pattern emerging over time.
I would set and reach a goal only to find myself UNHAPPY. Reaching my goal and getting that thing that I thought I wanted did NOT make my happy.
Why is that? I"m glad you asked.
True happiness does not come from external sources.
In this Psychology Today article, the author points out:
A "happy person" experiences the spectrum of emotions just like anybody else, but the frequency by which they experience the negative ones may differ.
Happiness is not what I possess. Happiness is a state of mind.
True happiness comes from connecting your deepest desires to what you do EVERY DAY.
Sorting out the deepest desires of our heart takes time and DEEP REFLECTION.
It is much easier to watch other people's lives and say "I want to that."
Sorting out your own desires and lining up your life to get what you really want and need will create your "happy." And that "sorting out" is REAL WORK.
A song I learned in church encapsulates this thought. The tagline is "This joy that I have, the world didn't give to me. The world didn't give it and the world can't take it away!"
The key to happiness lies in getting clear about what you truly desire on the deepest level of your soul. In order to do that, you must take the time to sift through the negative thoughts, limiting beliefs, and fears that get in the way of you doing what it takes to live in FREEDOM.
Happiness is NOT a destination. It is an experience. And it is something you can access every day of your life (without drugs or alcohol).
What have you been pursuing to make you happy?
I recommend that you take the time to get clear on WHY you want it in the first place.
When you do, you may find that the thing you are pursuing will not fulfill your deepest desire.
At that moment, you will have your key to freedom.
