A Journey to Unique featuring Jessica Desmond-Bennett
This post starts the first in a series of posts about real people who have navigated the journey to finding their Unique. The goal is to encourage you to pursue your own journey to greatness through the pathway of loving your Unique.
I tracked down one of my friends from middle school, Jessica Desmond-Bennett. She is currently a full-time nurse and is soon to release her debut book – My Awakening, The Journey to Discovering Me.
I asked her to share about her journey to loving and living her Unique. Check out what this rising star had to share with us!
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Jessica Desmond-Bennett; I am a 48 year old wife, mother and most importantly a devoted servant of The Most High God. I exist on this planet to Encourage, Inspire, Motivate others, and to spread God's Love & Light.
When and why did you decide to step outside of your comfort zone?
A few years ago, I heard a preacher say, “Why are you so afraid to be Great?” I thought about that quest for a long time. I started to ask myself that question, Why am I afraid to be Great? I wrote in my journal all the answers that came to my mind. In the end, it came down to fear. I decided I wasn’t going to let fear rule my life any longer. I wrote in my journal all the things I was afraid of and the bottom line was failure. I didn’t want to fail, so I decided I wouldn’t fail. I would step out on my faith that the Holy Spirit is guiding my every step, which has already been ordered by God, so as long as I listened and obeyed, I couldn’t fail.
Why is living your Unique important to you? Growing up, I always felt alone, I never really thought I fit in anywhere, sometimes not even in my own home. I always felt I should be somewhere else, like there was something else out there for me, but I wasn't sure exactly what that something else was or how to get it. After “only existing" for forty years, one day I heard the voice of God like I had never heard it before. It told me I was created for a purpose, that I had treasures and secrets inside of me, but it was my job to seek Him to find out how that purpose was to unfold. The more I became quiet and listened, the more it started to reveal who I was in God and Who God was in me. I didn’t know who Jessica really was, what she liked or disliked, but the more I learned about Jessica, the more I really started to like her, then eventually I started to Love her. Because I now know my contribution to this planet is important, I appreciate ME! Have you ever been bullied? Tell us a little about your experience. I haven't ever been bullied per se, but because I didn't know who I was or my worth, I have inflicted a lot of mental, emotional and physical harm upon myself. What was the biggest fear you had to conquer on your journey? My biggest fear was the fear of failure. I was and sometimes still am guilty of being a perfectionist, wanting everything to be just right, which also caused me to procrastinate and become stagnant. What encouraged you to push past your fears and doubts? After the death of my mother, I suffered a great depression. I didn't want to do anything, go anywhere; I didn't want the responsibility of living. One day, as I laid in my bed, in my dark room, I could hear my mother's voice saying, "Get Up Girl! You can't die because I did, you have to live and raise your children, Get Up Now!" So I did. Meditation and prayer helped me push through and looking into the eyes of my children gave me the will to live. If you had to choose only one thing to take on your journey, which would you choose: wisdom, love, courage, or hope? Why? Wisdom without a doubt! Wisdom will show me how to acquire the rest. The wisdom of God teaches me all things. It teaches me how to love myself and others; it teaches me what courage and hope really looks like and how to develop it.
What encouragement do you have for people who struggle with being “different”? We were not created to be a copy of each other. Our Creator gave each of us something unique. Everyone is important; we all have something to offer. We MUST first understand our value to God. To Him it doesn't matter what horrible things that have happened to us or what others think about us, our value to Him never changes, He called us Worthy and Priceless! We look different and no one has the same fingerprints for a reason. He said WE were fearfully and wonderfully made, which means our Creator put a lot of thought into everything about us. It is our duty to be the Best we can be. We can no longer try to put wings on a caterpillar; we either fly or stay on the ground. Choose to show gratitude to your creator by expressing your God-given Greatness. #RockYourUnique! What does the future hold for you?
My future is so bright; I always have a pair of sunglasses handy. Now that I am free, I choose to Soar higher than ever, to Shine brighter than before and to encourage others to do the same.
~For He knows the thoughts and plans He has for ME, thoughts to prosper ME and not harm ME, plans to give ME hope and a future.~
Did you hear that Unicorns? #RockYourUnique
I love it!
