Why "I don't have time" is the worst excuse
"I don't have time to workout" is the most used excuse for not sticking to a fitness regimen. Let's face it, we are all busy. A lack of time has become a way of life for most people.
But is a lack of time really the problem? Time is the great equalizer. Think of the most successful person that you know. What do you have in common with them? Both of you have only 24 hours in a day. Successful people do NOT get any more time on the clock than you.
What separates the successful people from others is how they choose to spend their time. You can waste it. Or you can choose to invest it. Time is just like money - a currency that can be spent as the user sees fit.
I remember the very first time that I did a time inventory. My boss at the time decided that his staff needed to assess how they were spending their time. So, for one week, we had to keep a log of our time.
I thought this was a colossal waste of time. I believed that I knew exactly how I spent my time. I was busy!
But because I desired to keep my job, I complied with what I thought was a silly experiment in wasting time. Man oh man, was I wrong!
At the end of the week, I reviewed my meticulously detailed notes. What I found surprised me. It turns out that I was wasting a lot of time. 15 minutes here and there added up to hours per week of time-sucking activities of no value.
This epiphany led me to complete a personal assessment of my time. Ditto. Huge time-wasters right there in front of my eyes. I was appalled.
This opened my eyes to something that is true in general, and specifically true about how we inventory our time. Most people, including you and me, are NOT self aware about how we spend our time.
So, for the last 20 years, I have been on a journey to maximizing my own productivity. Seven years ago, I decided to take charge of my health after experiencing a sudden illness. That included fitting in physical activity to my already busy schedule. I don't have more time in a day than anyone else. But what I have done for fitness (and my spiritual journey) is put a premium on the time that I spend doing it. It is important to me.
You will make time for what is IMPORTANT.
And if you don't have something IMPORTANT in your life, you will waste your time on any and everything including huge time suckers.
Recently, one of my daughter's announced that she is taking a break from Facebook. I asked her why. Here was her response:
"Mom, Facebook is a huge distraction. I have other things that I need to focus on."
I believe that says it all. Most of what you experience in your day are huge distractions from your purpose. Being intentional about how you spend your time is one of the best things that you can do to get your life on track.
