The Fear Trap
an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.
be afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening.
Most of us cruise through life failing to tell ourselves the truth: we are SCARED. We are also afraid to admit it.
And our fear ensnares us in a trap.
Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.
Dr. Brene Brown
As much as we celebrate courage and being brave (we love to see it in our heroes), we FAIL to show courage when we need it the most.
We hide it well though.
We hide behind:
Trying to be perfect.
Pretending like we have it all together.
Pointing out other people's faults and mistakes.
Buying attention with shiny toys, fancy houses, expensive cars, and designer clothes.
Flaunting our achievements.
Underneath it all is fear.
Fear that we are not enough. Smart enough. Pretty enough. Rich enough. Successful enough. Popular enough.
This fear creates a deep void. Behold the whole in our soul!
We look really good on the outside while our insides wither away.
I can't tell you the exact day or hour that I woke up to this truth: I am enough!
The peace and joy that followed has been absolutely amazing.
The secret to this experience was not just in saying "I am enough." The real power was in BELIEVING that I am enough.
I wish that I could tell you that my FEAR also left. It didn't. It is still there.
I feel the FEAR just before I am about to do something BIG. Or something NEW. Or something DIFFERENT.
It starts as a fluttering in my belly and rises to my throat. I find it hard to swallow. I feel my face flushing and then my heart skips a beat. Hello FEAR.
What I have learned to do in moments like this is square my shoulders, whisper a prayer, and take a deep breath. And DO what I am absolutely AFRAID of doing.
And in that moment of DOING, I find wings to fly above my fear.
My dream is that you will find your wings too. And soar above your fear.
Knowing that YOU ARE ENOUGH.
And that I am cheering for you!
P.S. I am on Day 2 of my journey through Dr. Brene Brown's book The Gifts of Imperfection. Join me on this short journey to loving your imperfect and Unique You!
