Soul Food: The Art of Balance
Our culture is in status overdrive. The new addiction is "I'm busy." Everyone claims to be overscheduled and overworked. You hear phrases like "I don't have time," "That will have to wait," "I will rest when I'm dead." We glorify the self-driven maverick who claims to get by on only three hours of sleep.
This belief - that I have more value based upon how much I do - has not come without some severe consequences. You can see it in the status of our health and relationships. We are out of balance and it is tearing at the very fiber of our souls.
We are in need of a severe reality check. Walking in the power and purpose of Your Unique cannot be done when you are worn out, frustrated, and an emotional bundle of nerves. Living Your Unique requires intentionality and focus. It starts with aligning our beliefs with truth. We cannot continue to tell ourselves a lie and convince ourselves that "it will all work out." We will eventually reap the consequences of living life running at full speed.
So how do you break free of this trap? It all starts with giving up the phrase "I have to ________." Just fill in the blank there.
Take a few minutes to write down your current "To Do" list. If you are having a mental block, see my "5 Steps to a Clear Mind."
Now put a checkmark by each item that you call a "have to." (Hint: if all of them are "have to," you need to follow my blog!)
This next step is the most drastic part. Look at those "have to"s and ask yourself this question: If I never did this, would it matter in 20 years?
Now, let's go one step deeper: If I didn't do this, would I regret it on my death bed?
If the answer to either of these questions is "No," you need to remove this from your "have to" list.
And more importantly, you need to STOP telling yourself that you "have to" do those things that you have marked off of your "have to" list. Getting out of balance is a result of us driving ourselves to do things that are not in alignment with who we are or where we are going.
Getting balance requires deep introspection into what you vision and value.
Today, I challenge you to take a serious look at "have to." Work on getting your list down to only the things that fit in with where you are going or want to go with your life. Aligning your "have to"s with your purpose will bring you into balance and focus. You will begin to see the possibilities in your life through a clear lens.
"The best is yet to come." But you have to be willing to release "have to."
