Redefining "Weird"

weird

/wird/

adjective

suggesting something supernatural; uncanny.

noun

SCOTTISH archaic

a person's destiny.

"You are weird!" At the time, those words crushed me. I wasn't sure what they meant, but I determined in my mind that whatever "weird" was, it was bad. And it made me feel bad. For years after that, I isolated myself. I withdrew from the world around me.

Then, one day it occurred to me. What some people thought was "weird," other people thought was "cool." What some people called "silly," other people called "having a good sense of humor." What intimidated some people fascinated others. In other words, I finally figured out that I was listening to the WRONG crowd.

No, I didn't go on to start believing that I was PERFECT and all of those other people were WEIRD. Rather, I decided that I am on my own journey and other people's commentary on MY JOURNEY had nothing to do with me. I am very far from perfect. And that imperfection is my value to myself and to the world. I love formulas (one of my weird quirks is being in love with math). So I came up with this formula:

COMPASSION + COURAGE X LOVE = FREEDOM

Yes, I got my FREEDOM the day that I decided to do three things:

1 - Have compassion for myself. That means:

Self-compassion is extending compassion to one's self in instances of perceived inadequacy, failure, or general suffering. Kristin Neff has defined self-compassion as being composed of three main components – self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness.

2 - Having the courage to stand in my authentic self and ignore other people's criticism.

3 - And using LOVE, the great multiplier. I learned to love myself while loving others for who they are (not who I want them to be). In other words, dropping the self-judgment and the judgment of others.

FREEDOM begins, not with other people, but with YOU. I hate to tell you this, but the other people may not (and probably will not) change. What will change is your attitude, outlook, and emotional health.

Your "weird" is actually UNIQUE. And there is something SUPERNATURAL about you. Your UNIQUE is not a curse. It is a GIFT to the world.

Now go get your FREEDOM and use that UNIQUE to make the world an AWESOME place.
