Your Unique is Beautiful

There are 7.4 billion people on planet earth. And you are ONE of them.

"You are Uniquely created by God. There is no one like you."

No one shares your exact DNA. You have unique fingerprints and footprints. Even identical twins have unique differences.

In this article posted on the Reflect on This website, the author points out that your life experiences also set you apart from others. No one has been where you have been or experienced exactly what you have experienced.

Your culture and family set you apart from others. Where you were born, how you were raised, and what you were taught to believe make you different.

And all of these differences are combined to create Your Unique.

Sadly, many of us start out at a young age being told what to do, what to wear, what to think, and how to behave. You may have been fortunate enough to have someone encourage you to live in your difference. The rest of us are left to struggling to conform to some man-made standard of who THEY think we ought to be.

We are often criticized for our difference. And this leads us to either be self-critical or outrageously rebellious. Either way, we give up on being who we really are to either conform or become a caricature. We put on a mask.

Masks can be beautiful and interesting. But the point of the mask is to hide what we do not want others to see. We are afraid to show them who we are.

"Why am I afraid to tell you who I am? Because you might not like me and I am all that I've got."

John Powell

This "masking" hides the true beauty that is underneath. It is also a barrier to the outside world. People cannot see our real beauty. And we fool ourselves into believing that the mask we wear is more interesting and beautiful than the beauty we carry within ourselves.

It is not until we drop the masks that people can see the beauty of who we are. We are not our masks. We are the Unique that is underneath the mask.

Today, I want to challenge you to accept the beauty of Your Unique. There will be people who will insist that you wear a mask. Don't listen to them. They want you to keep wearing your mask so that they can keep wearing theirs. And the masquerade party can continue.

You may be the first in your family or circle of influence to do this. Be brave, my friend. Be bold indeed. You will make a path for others around you to confront this world without their mask.

And the beauty of each person's Unique will create an intricate tapestry of a beauty never seen before. The beauty of Unique.

Love Your Unique. Live Your Unique.

P.S. John Powell's book, Why Am I Afraid to Tell You Who I Am, is one of the books that helped me along my journey. Check it out here.
